The donation of a high-tech pan-tilt-zoom camera is bringing the installation of CCTV cameras to monitor downtown Dargaville a step closer to becoming a reality.

Dargaville police constable, Reuben Cohen, says the donation from United Security is gratefully received.

“This resource gives us the opportunity to achieve what we want to do. It’s a crime prevention tool in order to aid safer communities together. It was a generous donation, and we’ll make good use of it.

“United Security have been chosen through due diligence. We’ve appointed them to be partners in the project and this donation is a good measure, which we accept happily.”

United Security Northland’s sales manager, Doug Shearer, says the company was motivated to donate the camera due to its relationship with the Dargaville Police and commitment to the community at large.

“Security is our core business. We’ve been involved with projects in Kaitaia and Kaikohe, and those communities have seen a noticeable decrease in disorderly street behaviour. The aim is crime prevention.”

The project is a collaboration between Dargaville police, the Dargaville Community Development Board, Dargaville Business Forum and United Security Northland. It is expected to be up and running in the next few weeks.

Cameras will stream footage to six 40 inch screens in the Dargaville Police Station, which will be monitored by volunteers 24/7. Each screen can be divided into 16 sections.

Dargaville Community Development Board chair, Alan Mortensen, says the process of getting the cameras up and running has been a long one with the odd speed bump, but now fully on track and a good exercise between the community, police and United Security.

“We really appreciate the gift of an additional high-tech camera. It’s very gratefully received.”

The cameras will be used for the deterrence or immediate detection of criminal offences. They must be operated in a manner that complies with the Privacy Act 1993.
